The Sugar Sweets are a passionate and collaborative group of dancers who take pride in presenting high quality, historically accurate vernacular jazz, blues and chorus girl dances from the 1910's through the 1950's. Our main inspiration comes from the famous Broadway and off-Broadway chorus lines of Ziegfield, Busby Berkeley, and the Rockettes. Other influences include modern jazz choreographers, such as Bob Fosse, and teachers and leaders of the Swing revival such as Frankie Manning and Al Minns. We are also constantly improvising and creating original routines of our own based on this rich historical foundation!
The Sugar Sweets are a non-registered non profit group. All of our show and gig proceeds are used to train our dancers and plan fun events to share our love and knowledge of vernacular jazz dance with the City of Calgary! We have auditions once or twice a year and welcome a diversity of dancers from different styles and experiences. When not busy putting on shows of our own creation, you can catch us around town performing at a variety of events - from arts festivals and Gatsby parties, to corporate events and community dances.
